More than just a mystery house, this San Jose landmark draws crowds with a whole lineup of experiences. Beyond the famous mansion, there are tours, seasonal events, after-dark nights, and one-of-a-kind happenings you will not find anywhere else. The latest addition to that lineup is Mind & Magic, a show where, for one night, the house plays host to the impossible.
There is something fitting about performing the unexplainable inside the most unexplainable house in America. Two mysteries under one roof. One is a physical puzzle nobody can solve. The other happens in people’s minds. From the very first conversation about bringing a show to the Winchester Mystery House, that is the idea I kept coming back to.
One of the things I admire most about this place is that it never sits still. The mystery of Sarah Winchester has fascinated people for over a century. It even inspired the 2018 thriller Winchester, starring Dame Helen Mirren and filmed in part right here. You can dig into the full history anytime, but the team has never been content to just retell it.
Instead, they keep finding new ways to surprise the people who walk through the door. Alongside the daily mansion experience, there is a whole range of tours and pop-up events throughout the year, from after-dark adventures to historian-led walk-throughs and seasonal happenings you will not find any other time. A magic and mentalism show is simply the newest addition to that lineup, and I was honored the team felt it belonged.
We premiered Mind & Magic on Friday the 13th. The whole idea was to launch with a bang, and that date was too good to pass up. Both performances nearly sold out, and the feeling in the room told me we were onto something.
When I sat down to build the show, I asked myself one thing: what can I do that is not just amazing, but also a bit more uncanny and mysterious, something that adds to the atmosphere of where it is taking place? My search for inspiration began with none other than Sarah Winchester. Her decades of nonstop construction, the stairs that lead to nowhere, the doors that open into walls, offered no shortage of ideas. I wanted to combine my own take on sleight of hand with mentalism and mind reading, the kind of thing that gives you the same feeling you get walking the grounds here.
And the house does half the work before I even start. The mystery in the walls primes people for the mystery in the show.
So what actually is this show? Mind & Magic is an hour of interactive magic that happens right in your hands, clean humor, plenty of audience participation, and most importantly, mentalism and mind reading. It invites you to decide for yourself what is fact and what is fiction.
One of my favorite moments starts with a guest locking a single random word in their mind from a book. As a mentalist, I can tell them exactly what they are thinking. But it does not stop there. When they go to reopen the book, the page is gone, neatly folded and tucked into another guest’s pocket
across the room. Truly unexplainable, and truly unforgettable!
It is not all serious mind games, though. There is warmth and lightheartedness throughout, a full journey of oohs and aahs, laughter, astonishment, and even a hint of danger. Don’t worry. Sarah and I both promise to keep you perfectly safe! The show ends with a moment that includes everybody in the room, with the magic happening in their own hands. The show is not really about performing the impossible. It is about a room full of people sharing something together that they will be talking about long after they leave.

A show like this is never just one person. The team at the Winchester Mystery House is the reason these experiences come to life. I have had the pleasure of working closely with Amelia, the Senior Manager of Marketing, and Ashley, the Marketing Coordinator and Social Media Manager, who helped shape everything from the idea to what we ended up calling the show. Charles, their graphic designer, created the visuals that give guests their first taste of what is coming. And on show nights there is a whole crew that makes it possible, from the audio-visual team to the house staff who welcome every guest in.
That welcome matters more than people realize. When you come, you are not just experiencing the house and the show. You are meeting the people who keep Sarah’s legacy alive, and that is what makes a night here feel personal. I am so grateful to this team for their hospitality, their kindness, and their openness to new ideas.
One of my favorite parts of this show is looking out and seeing every kind of person, young and old, who came not just to be entertained but to explore the impossible together. After a show, I like to send people back out feeling a little lighter, with the sense that there is still a bit more mystery out there to explore. Mind & Magic takes place on very select dates across the Winchester Mystery House’s busy schedule, so catch us while you can! Our next performances are July 11 and July 18, with each ticket including the one-hour show in the Carriage House. Whether you come for the magic, a tour, or anything else the house offers throughout the year, I hope you will let it be one more reason to visit.
If you are looking for a break from the ordinary and ready to experience something extraordinary, Mind & Magic at the Winchester Mystery House might just be your ticket to an unforgettable, and most importantly, unexplainable evening!
