It’s All In the Details: Stained Glass

With the excessively large size of Sarah Winchester’s mysterious house, one can only imagine just how many windows there are here. Fortunately for us, we have over 10,000 panes of glass! That’s more than the Empire State Building!

Now, not all windows are fancy, but this week we’re going to look at some of the more intricate details of the windows inside the Winchester Mystery House.

It’s All In the Details: Stained Glass

First stained glass window you’ll see on tour is well, a lot of them! But most noticeably is the spider webbed stain glass window. This window is quite important to Sarah’s history, as she designed this herself to feature two of her favorite things: the spiderweb, and the number 13. Hint: Count the dots.

As you move along through the house, you’ll see more and more stain glass. Naturally, they occur in more of the most opulent rooms.

This is one of the more intricate windows of the house and is featured in the Daisy Bedroom. As you can see, Sarah had these windows made to best represent the room itself! Another 13 occurs here too! Count some of the petals, and her number will appear!

Now, not all stain glass pieces have a fascinating story behind them. Some, like these arched pieces are simply just beautiful to look at!

Finally, here is one of the two grand ballroom stain glass pieces! Now, we don’t quite know why she picked these quotes, but this one specifically is from ‘Troilus and Cressida’, a  precursor to the Shakespearean play that begs to ask many open ended questions still unanswered to this day.
